At the Start

The young kids all “competed” in a race to the other side of the pond and back. Since most of them can’t go very far in a straight line, they each have a *oniichan* or *oneechan* (big brother or big sister) who swims behind and pushes as needed. I love this photo because it captures so much: the various reactions of the kids lined up to race and the older kids poised to make the whole thing work. The older kids are all great. I just learned that the girl nearest to the camera is president of her school class. She’s got my vote; she’s helping Mari (my daughter) who was feeling nervous both Saturday (practice) and Sunday (undoukai). Maika (Mari’s twin sister) is wearing a yellow jacket. Reia is just after Maika in the pink life jacket.
