Farming Burning

While at the park the other day I saw smoke rising over the trees. I walked over and saw this.

Today (Saturday here) I went to a nearby junior high school for a “sports day.” A friend here in Hachioji has been organizing these events. A bunch of internationals got together and played sports with Japanese junior high kids. I played soccer and had a great time. Our team consisted of a bunch of guys from Sri Lanka, one guy from India, a couple Japanese guys, and me (the American). We took on the baseball team and lost 3-2. Actually, we were winning at first, but then we sent one of our best players over to the other side…

Others played badminton and ping-pong. Afterwards we ate cheeseburgers and onigiri (rice balls) with the kids. A couple of Sri Lankan guys sang a song (very cool). To fill the remaining time (and then some) we all introduced ourselves, and then we went home.

The highlight, for me, was having some great conversations with a few Japanese volunteers. It’s also a great time to get together with some internationals I’ve been getting to know.

Well, my daughter is waiting for her reading lesson (Teach Your Child How to Read in 100 Easy Lessons — super highly recommended!!).
